Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM - Free Report) used its third-quarter 2026 earnings call to emphasize progress across its major expansion projects while acknowledging persistent cost inflation. Management maintained annual production and cost guidance despite higher diesel prices and operational challenges.

Executives highlighted long-term production growth, capital discipline and shareholder returns. Analyst questions focused on 2027 cost pressures, project execution, labor availability and the sustainability of capital distributions.

AEM Targets Substantial Long-Term Production Growth

President and CEO Ammar Al-Joundi reiterated plans to increase annual gold production by 20% to 30% over the next decade, potentially exceeding 4 million ounces in the early-to-mid-2030s.

The company's four principal growth initiatives, Detour Lake underground, Canadian Malartic expansions, Hope Bay and Upper Beaver, are expected to contribute an additional 1.3 million to 1.5 million ounces annually by the mid-2030s.

CFO James Porter said these projects could generate returns of approximately 25% to 50% at current spot gold prices. Management emphasized growth per share rather than production expansion alone.

AEM reported quarterly earnings of $2.61 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.47. Third-quarter revenues of $3.58 billion topped the consensus mark of $3.55 billion.

Agnico Maintains Guidance Despite Rising Costs

AEM expects 2026 gold production near the lower end of its 3.3 million to 3.5 million-ounce guidance range. Total cash costs and all-in sustaining costs are projected near the upper ends of their respective $1,020-$1,120 and $1,400-$1,550 per-ounce ranges.

Porter reported quarterly production of 814,012 ounces, total cash costs of $1,133 per ounce and all-in sustaining costs of $1,648 per ounce.

During the Barclays Q&A, Porter clarified that elevated diesel prices increased third-quarter cash costs by approximately $30 per ounce relative to budget. He indicated potential impacts of $50-$60 per ounce in the fourth quarter and as much as $80 per ounce in 2027.

AEM Advances Detour Lake and Odyssey Projects

Executive Vice President and COO Natasha Nella Vaz highlighted Detour Lake's underground development progress, including record ramp advancement following the internalization of development activities.

A bulk sample is expected during the first half of 2027, supporting evaluation of underground production beginning as early as 2028. Management continues assessing additional mining and processing capacity.

At Canadian Malartic, executive vice president and COO Dominique Girard confirmed that Odyssey remains on schedule for shaft-hoisted production in the second quarter of 2027. The first shaft-sinking phase was completed four months ahead of schedule.

Agnico Pushes Forward at Hope Bay and Upper Beaver

Girard reported that Hope Bay construction was approximately 13% complete at September-end, with detailed engineering progressing and the annual sealift successfully completed.

At Upper Beaver, Nella Vaz reported that shaft sinking reached approximately 732 meters. Management is evaluating deeper exploration opportunities following encouraging drilling results.

Executive vice president of Exploration Guy Gosselin highlighted drilling success across Odyssey, Detour Lake and Hope Bay. He expects continued progress in mineral reserve and resource replacement.

AEM Faces Labor and Inflation Questions for 2027

During the Scotiabank Q&A, management acknowledged that 5%-6% cost inflation represents a reasonable modeling assumption, while emphasizing that final 2027 budgets remain under development.

Al-Joundi identified skilled labor availability as a longer-term challenge rather than immediate wage inflation. Girard and Nella Vaz discussed centralized recruitment, housing initiatives and employee training programs.

A Bank of America analyst also questioned potential upside to Detour Lake's 2028 production outlook. Nella Vaz cautioned that broader expansion evaluations remain preliminary, with additional project details expected in 2027.

Agnico Balances Growth Spending and Shareholder Returns

Porter emphasized the company's ability to finance expansion while maintaining shareholder distributions. AEM ended September with approximately $3.4 billion in net cash.

Quarterly free cash flow reached $852 million, supporting $478 million in dividends and repurchases. Management expects shareholder distributions to exceed 50% of 2026 free cash flow, subject to operating requirements.

The overarching message remained focused on disciplined execution, productivity improvements and advancing long-duration projects. Management plans to provide further strategic details at its November 18 Capital Markets Day.

AEM's Zacks Rank and Style Scores Signal Caution

AEM currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell), indicating an unfavorable near-term earnings revision outlook. Its Value Score of D contrasts with stronger Growth and Momentum Scores of B, while its combined VGM Score stands at C.

Although the Growth and Momentum scores reflect more favorable characteristics, the weaker Value score and Zacks Rank temper the overall assessment. The Zacks Rank can change as analysts revise earnings estimates following the recently reported results.
